The name, Living on Purpose Therapy, stems from the belief that everyone has the potential to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life, especially when you bravely and intentionally step toward your future. A therapist is a guide or companion as you intentionally pursue healing and wholeness. Connection is the goal and the medium through which healing can flow.  Whether it's individual or relationship counseling, I understand the whole person as a part of a system where attachment styles and communication patterns are both the source of pain and the path to healing.

    Power of Perspective

    (subject: military family, parenting)

When my active military member son was ‘sent on a trip’, it wasn’t the first time I felt that lack of ability to protect my child because we learn this as they begin to walk, go to school, get their driver’s license, leave for college/military. Parenting is a process of growth that happens as you go and that growth cannot be simulated.

As my son went to an unknown location, with limited to zero communication, I had to dig deep to bear what felt like an unfathomable lack of ability to help my kid. I had to guard my mind from vain imaginations. I needed a new perspective.

Fortunately, I remembered a time when this same son was playing football in a Pee Wee league. It was his (and ours) first season playing tackle. Standing on the sidelines of a game beside a seasoned mom, we watched and I learned.

My son went down in a play, and I immediately lunged forward with instinct. The mom beside me noticed, grabbed my arm and said “wait.” What she said next has been life changing and current for this new season of being an active military family member.

“When he is on that field, he is not your baby. He is doing his job.”

At the time, I leaned hard on that support from this seasoned parent of a football player. Now, I continue to lean on her words as I become a seasoned parent of a military member. The perspective shift was protective of my heart and mind and gave me the ability to support my son in the way he needed, through my steady confidence and faith.

When he is on that field, he is not my baby, he is doing his job. When he gets home, he can be my baby, and I will make him all of his favorite food. Until then, he is working and I support, respect, and honor him and his role in that work.

Parenting is a process of growth. It does not stop when they turn 18 but it has to shift to higher levels of trust. From day one, parenting changes you and is an opportunity to become a greater version of yourself. I have since had another son join the military, giving me more opportunity to implement these perspective shifts and grow as a parent.

To all who serve, thank you.

"Nothing affects the life of a child so much as the unlived life of its parent."
